Quilt top
This is the beautiful facing design of your quilt. The top of the quilt shows the design or monogram in its proper alignment and is the part that will be seen either hanging on the wall or draped across the crib.
Quilt backing
This is the back side fabric that enhances or compliments the quilt top. On a whole cloth quilt the design is reversed to the back, but retains the beauty and symmetry of the quilt stitching. One of the unique features of a whole cloth quilt is that it is just as beautiful on the back as it is on the front.
Binding
this little bit of cloth holds it all together, the binding finishes the raw edges of your quilt, creates a decorative edge and ensures that the quilt will be strong enough for everyday use.
Piping
Piping is a decorative edge added to the binding for added stability and to ensure that your quilt will lie or hang perfectly flat.
Batting
Batting is the middle layer of your quilt. It adds thickness, warmth, softness, breathability, and sometimes protection to your quilt.
Thread
The choice of thread is very important to the life of your heirloom quilt. Many threads are now available, yet traditional silk and cotton are still considered superior. I use organic 100% silk and cotton thread in all my quilts.
Tyvek Sleeve
Tyvek is a manmade material. It’s properties include strength, tear resistance, breathability and dust resistance. Tyvek is the material of choice for long term quilt storage. Using a Tyvek sleeve, quilts can be rolled instead of folded (eliminating fold lines in your quilt) for long term professional quality storage. My Tyvek Quilt Sleeves have a hand sewn Velcro closure and, if ordered with a quilt, a personalized label.
